I am an American who has been living in New Zealand since 1996. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina when Eisenhower was president–that’s a few years back.
Work stuff
I’m a professor of management communication at the Waikato Management School, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. I teach and do research on organisational communication–especially stuff like how organisations communicate about major changes, and even more especially, major technology-related changes. I lead a major government-funded research project on “The Impact of Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) on Work and Communities”.
I’m also chair of Waikato 2020 Communications Trust – a charitable trust dedicated to providing the benefits of information and communication technologies to the Waikato community.
Personal stuff
I’m married to Brenda and my 15 year old daughter is Andrea. Brenda and Andrea have a dog and 2 cats that they subject me to. Okay, I like them, but it’s a love-hate thing. Brenda and I like the outdoors. Hiking/tramping and generally seeing New Zealand are passions. Andrea and I like the snow; I ski and she snowboards and we’re both convinced the other needs to switch (I’m right, of course). We all love the beach, especially Tairua, on the Coromandel peninsula, where we have a section that, with a bit of luck, one day will have a bach on it.

Dear Prof. Ted Zorn
Nice read your blog. My name is Syhadah. I am a PhD student from Malaysia. Currently I’m working on my research methodology. I found an article related to semi-structured interview “Designing and Conducting Semi-Structured Interviews for Research”. It such a good and clear article explains on semi-structured interview. I am very sure, this article belongs to you. I really hope to get more detail on this article, so that I can quote or put it as a reference for my research.
Thank you very much in advance and hope to hear from you soon.
With best regards

Hello Dr Zorn, I really enjoyed your post on social media and its uses for organizations. I have met you previously when you visited North Carolina State University last semester. You spoke in our organizational communication grad class (I was the student from england) i m not sure if you will remember me. I am interested in learning more about the PHD offerings at Waikato management school and wanted your advice on gaining information, i have viewed the website so far but would like more information on how it is tailored and duration of study etc. I hope all is well and i look forward to hearing from you.

Ted Zorn – I remember the communication audit we did of ARA Services when I was a grad student in or-comm at UNC! Looks like you are doing great! I wondered where you were teaching now!
I was successful in merging my journalism minor and or-comm major into a career in educational pr. I was most recently director of communications at NC State’s College of Design (for 6.5 years). I am now the first director of internal communication for the NC Community College System. I don’t know if you remember or not, but I did my research on the internal communication about internal marketing at the community college system.
Hope you are doing well! Happy holidays!
Sherry
